Chapter 16

Laverne reluctantly scooched off the couch. “I suppose I can agree to that. I’ll try it once, and if it doesn’t work out, I can eat my meals in here.”

“If that’s your decision, but I have a feeling you may change your mind.” Jo placed the leftover food in the fridge while Laverne freshened up in the bathroom.

She joined Jo moments later, a grim expression on her face.

“Cheer up. You’re not facing a firing squad. You’re going to eat dinner.” Jo propelled her out of the building and across the yard. She didn’t release her grip until they were inside the dining room, where the rest of the residents sat waiting.

“We’re sorry to keep you waiting.” Jo gave Sherry a gentle hug. “I’m glad you could make it, Sherry. We need to have a quick chat after dinner before I drive you home.”

“Okay.” Sherry cast Laverne a questioning glance.

“Laverne Huntsman, this is Sherry Marshall. Sherry recently moved out and now has her own apartment in Divine.”

“Thanks to Jo,” Sherry beamed. “I heard you’re my replacement. You’re going to love the farm.”

“That’s what I’ve been told.” Laverne offered her a tentative smile.

“Sit here.” Jo motioned to the empty seat to her left, directly across from Delta.

“The food smells delicious,” Laverne said politely.

“I made a pot roast with potatoes, carrots and onions, along with a side of green beans.”

“And Delta’s amazing cornbread muffins,” Raylene added.

“Let’s pray.” Jo bowed her head, and the dining room grew quiet. “Thank you, Lord, for this food on the table. Thank you for every person gathered here this evening. I pray for blessings in each of their lives. Lord, we pray a special prayer for Sherry, for her safety and her new home, and thank you for bringing Laverne to the farm. We pray the transition will be smooth for all of us, and we’ll grow together as a result. Amen.”

“Amen,” the others at the table echoed.

Sherry was the first to speak. “You got here today?”

“This morning.” The platter of pot roast passed by, and Laverne shook her head. She scooped a spoonful of vegetables onto her plate and added a cornbread muffin.

Jo watched Laverne out of the corner of her eye as she studied the others at the table. There was a lively conversation as the residents questioned Sherry about her new home and then shared the details of Gary’s unexpected proposal with her.

“I thought he was choking on one of my peanut butter cream cheese truffle balls. He turned white as a ghost,” Delta said. “I yanked him out of the chair and started the Heimlich maneuver.”

Gary chuckled. “I thought Delta was gonna bust my ribs. I was barely able to tell her I wasn’t choking.”

“Next thing I know, he’s on one knee and holding up a ring. It was so romantic. I’ll never forget it for as long as I live,” Delta breathed dreamily.

“I don’t think any of us will either,” Jo teased. “You mentioned a summer wedding. Have you picked a date?”

“I…” Delta cast Gary a quick glance.
